My 2 Day Practice from Lands End
For big events, I have always tended to do a reccie. The plan was to ride stages 1 and 2 of the main event. However, this did not come without its challenges.
Living in Guernsey, means that it takes a bit of organisation to get over to the UK. Part of that is cat sitters. I struck lucky with a lovely vet nurse who did a great job with my 7 cherubs.
I am not going to go into lots of detail but in all we had tech issues, phone battery issues (despite using powerbanks), navigational issues.
We have decided that this course does not work for me. I think it is great if you want to take 12-14 days to get there.
Back to the drawing board. Well, kind of but I struck lucky as a lovely chap called Marc and his bro, Gerard, came and sat with me for over an hour yesterday about their LEJOG experience. Additionally, Marc has provided me with the course he set out when he (and Gerard) did the course as part of a group 3 years ago. I am so appreciative of this.
This means I will need to change most of my accommodation. Additionally, we have decided to take 9 days, which gives us a little extra time should we meet unforeseen challenges along the way.
In time, I will post about specifics of some of the issues we had for future LEJOGers.
Additionally, I had some physical issues which means we are working on changing the nutrition strategy, alongside ensuring I have a lot more sodium as I seem to need a bucket load of that.
Overall, this all confirms the importance of doing some kind of reccie/prep trip.
Here is a pic of me on the King Harry Ferry at River Fal. It was super cool. Go on it if you get a chance. A big climb out the other side though.
